Old sodierSculpture by Richard McKelvey of Swannington. Dedicated to his grandfather Frant Buttifant, a Chelsea Pensioner and veteran of WWII who is the remaining survivor of his company. He was imprisoned by the Japanese and forced to work in the mines of Kinkaseki, Formosa and freed by the Americans.
In the process of making the sculpture, the bark was removed to reveal it had started to heal itself and is symbolic of man's struggle and ability to reinvent and survive against the appalling odds. At the base are crosses carved in a variety of woods to symbolise the various nationalities and ethnicities of the World.

Wreningham fuel trust

This year the Trustees have a reasonable sum of money to distribute but to date we have had very few applications.  If you are suffering hardship at this time, or if you know of somebody who could do with a little help with their heating bills, please let us have their names. This fund is open of all age groups.
Traditionally, in the event of few applications, the Trust invites persons over the age of 70 years to apply to the fund and once again we would consider applications from this group.

A distribution will take place in January. Please apply with name and address of the applicant or nominated person to the clerk:  Christine Minns, High Gables, Church Road, Wreningham, NR16 1BH (Tel: 488123)  If you need any further explanations or details do contact me by phone.

Village hall microgeneration project

The village hall trustees are keen to reduce the hall’s carbon footprint and to help achieve this have applied for 2 grants that (if awarded) would together provide the means to install a wind turbine on the far side of the hall car park and photovoltaic (P.V.) cells on one side of the hall roof. This would provide a more sustainable means of supplying electricity for the hall’s power requirements and help reduce the fuel bills. We also intend to improve the insulation of the building and will take other energy efficiency measures where ever possible.

As previously mentioned in The Mardle, a Project Development Study was undertaken by the local Clean Energy Consultancy and they have recommended that a 15m (domestic type) turbine would be suitable for our purposes. In the recently published Parish Plan an encouraging amount of support has been shown for this sort of small scale turbine and so we hope that this will go ahead in the next year and be of great benefit to the village community for the future. At the moment one half of the grant funding has been secured from the Low Carbon Building Programme (LCBP) and we expect to here news of the other half of the potential funding from the Community Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP) by Christmas/new year.

If we are successful in gaining the further grant funding we will then need to apply for planning permission for the turbine and PV cells. Look out for further information on the progress of the project in the Mardle and on this website. More detailed information will be forthcoming once we know if the funding has been secured, meanwhile, please contact the village hall management committee if you have any questions about the project.
